Located between two mountain ranges and two rivers, Dehradun City is quite strategic for tourists, trekkers, and mountain sports enthusiasts. The climate of the city is temperate, especially balmy during summer. The Forest Research Institute (FRI) which is world famous for its research work in forestry -- the only institution of its kind in Asia -- is situated here. Besides, the headquarters of important establishments like the Oil and Natural Commission; Survey of India, the Military Academy, Central Braille Press, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, and so on are also located here. The Gurudwara built by Guru Ram Raj during the reign of Aurangzeb in the Dhamanwala locality of the town is a religious place of eminence. Robber’s Cave, situated at a distance of about 6 km from the DIT University campus, is a fun place for all. The cave is a natural picnic spot surrounded by hills where water suddenly disappears from sight and goes underground only to reappear after a few yards in the form of a stream. The city has many beautiful rest houses and good hotels to provide accommodation to the tourist. For many years, it has been one of the best-known educational centres in India. Mussorie, "the queen of hills", is about 20 km from the university. Dehradun is well linked by rail and road with Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Lucknow, and Varanasi.

Climate

The Climate of the district is generally temperate. October marks the beginning of autumn in Dehradun and this is when the weather begins to cool down a bit. Winter in Dehradun arrives in December and the temperatures drop down to 3 degrees Celsius, owing to snowfall in nearby hill stations, such as Mussoorie. The maximum temperature during this time is 22 degrees Celsius. This is a nice time to explore Dehradun as one can explore the sights while soaking in the winter sunshine. It is advised to carry woolen clothing, since it gets quite cold during this time, especially during the evenings and nights.
